Lesson 12

Q. How am I to relate to government, and what do I owe to Christ and others?
A. I am to submit to the government because it is under God’s authority, and I owe love to others. I am to put on Christ and avoid those things that tempt me to sin.

Have you ever read about a certain topic in one book of the Bible and then find that same idea addressed in a different book? Those are called parallel passages. That’s just another way we see that the Bible is one, unified book. See how the passages below are similar to what we discovered in Romans 13 this week.

Day 1
Read 1 Peter 2:13–14 (Romans 13:1–7).
Why do we have government?
What should our attitude be toward governing authorities?
What is your attitude toward the government?

Day 2
Read Luke 10:25–37 (Romans 13:8–10).
In the parable of the Good Samaritan, how does Jesus define “neighbor”?
Who are the “neighbors” in your life? How can you show love to them?

Day 3
Read 1 Thessalonians 5:1–11 (Romans 13:11–14).
How are these two passages similar?
What are some warnings Paul gives? Which one especially applies to you right now?

Day 4
Read Matthew 25:1–13.
In the parable of the Ten Virgins, what mistake did the foolish women make?
Are you living as if Jesus could return at any time? How can you be prepared?
